Hi Russ- We are really interested in some of the more primitive cabana resorts, but our travel agent is leary...She found us the Catalonia Royal Talum (which is still way bigger than we wanted), but I would still love to find out from someone who ha…
Hey Brandi;
There is no other place like Tulum that I have been to in all the Caribbean. Yes both hotels are VERY rustic, no electric in the cabanas, moquito netting on the bed, you pretty much live in your bathingsuit and a cover up, you can sit on the beac and just get lost watching the ocean and fallign asleep at night listening to it....AMAZING
Cabanas Copal is actually on a small ledge that overlooks a small beach and the ocean, you have to walk down about 8 steps to get to the beach. There is a restaurant and a spa on property and is powered by wind and solar energy, the do have private bathrooms in the cabanas with hot water (most days).
Retiro Maya is located about 2 km down the beach road headed toward the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve, These cabanas are literally on the beach, they are on conrete slabs, however they put sand on the floor to give it a little more "beachy feeling" again there is mosquito netting and someof the cabanas have an open air shower, I didn't though we had a window that we left open in the bathroom. This hotel also runs on a generator so no electric in the cabanas only at the restuarant and beach bar. Same as with Retiro Maya hot water in the bathroom (most days)There is nothing like sitting on the swings at sunrise with a cup of coffee in hand and watching the sand crabs scurring around at day break
OK I have rambled on, sorry about that :) If you want to give me a shout you can always call me (866) 878-7477 x 121 or my direct line is (732) 704-1893

Dear Brandi,
Welcome to the Tulum Social Club!
We started this site to get people who have never been to the Tulum area before excited about Tulum and people who have been there and LOVED it, to post stories, comments, suggestions, pictures and videos to share.
Feel free to get involved and ask questions, let us know if you need help with anything before you travel. We will be delighted to assist.
