Hey Russ-
Thank you for the welcome. I am actually looking into all the possibilities of moving and living down in that area. If you have any advice or help, it would be appreciated greatly!

Hey Bo,

Over the last 20 years I have spent a lot of time there. We owned all the internet connections souht of Cancun for many years back in the mid/late 90's as well as 100 km of wireless backbone along the coast which still serves most of the coast outside the towns.

Looked at moving many times, did a number if extended stays but could not make the final step. First thing you should do if you can arrange it is to take a month and go down and stay. If that works for you them try 3 months (this changed my mind). I have seen all to many people go for a couple weeks, think it was heaven and move only to be unhappy and many $$ shorter than when they came because they rushed down.

Playa and the Riviera Maya are beautiful, wonderful for vacations or even a few months of runaway, but living there is 'different'. Move slow, buy smart and and be sure you can rent it if you want to came back (-:

!Hola! Russ
Thanks for the warm welcome!
My sister and I are traveling to Tulum in October for my 30th birthday (gulp!) However we are having a really hard time deciding where to stay in Tulum as it all looks so incredible .. hoping you Tulum Social Clubbers might have some suggestions!
We're not interested in being typical tourists (we wish we could avoid Cancun all together)! But we do want amazing beaches for sunbathing/walking & swimming, snorkling etc. Our accom doesn't have to be flash - just clean, safe and comfortable and hopefully within walking distance to other places as we won't have a car! We're not coming to party - however I had always planned on a Margherita in hand and some mariachi guitar for my birthday! So accom with a bar/restaurant and maybe some nightlife would be good!
Would love to hear any suggestions/comments/tips from those of you in the know! We are just so excited to be visiting what looks like a true patch of paradise!
Thanks for having us!

Here are a few thoughts about going to Tulum in October. Where you stay will have a lot to do with budget and sleeping arrangements. Do you require 2 beds? Many of the cabana properties have a singe queen or king per room far less have 2 doubles.

Cabanas Copal in an oceanfront room or Aziluk also beachfron are good options if you don't require 2 beds. These units are rustic but have good water (for the area), are on the ocean (you don't want a garden or jungle room if you can avoid it) and a good level of quality in the experience.

Another option could be Zulum. Personally I like this hotel, it is a good mix and you can get 2 doubles in a room. The management was discussing a manadtory meal plan check with your agent. I have stayed at all 3 of these and some I will not recommend.

I owuld also encourage you to consider 3 nights in Tulum and maybe 4 in Playa Del Carmen. Unless you really want to be 'away' from people, Tulum is pretty quiet (very) during October. Playa offers a little more in dining, shopping, drinking, flirting, and still has great beaches and reasonable prices. Either of these 2 properties are very nice, both are on the beach Hotel Playa Palms or Playa Maya Boutique Hotel. Retiro Maya is also a good option, Lu (owner) is a good friend (-:

Kris Cheney knows the region well. She is a member here and can book most of the boutique properties. If you are staying in the small hotels, find someone that can help you. They are all very different and whoever you work with should know the area and properties well to guide you.

Hey Roaddog,

Good to hear from you. I have heard rumors that the ejido has caused some questions about ownership of a couple of the properties, this is not new and usually works itself out without effecting guests.

There are also lots of rumors about certain properties loosing their leases this year. We are going to be down next month, I will go ask some more specific questions while I am there. Thanks for the heads up (-:

Gracias, gracias, it was an accident that I found this site, is it yours?

I live at and manage Xamach Dos which is about 9 kms south of the bridge on the way to Punta Alien. Been here about 2 years.

I've actually never met Anna, but have heard lots about her, she's been here a long time. I'm friends with most of the neighbors here, some old timers! I don't believe she's living here now.

Es un Otonio dia bonita aqui. Drizzley, grey and just plain gorgeous. There isn't a day here that isn't beautiful........! We've had some real down pours lately, which we needed desparately. It has been a dry summer....now everything is clean and green. Nice thunder and lightning storms, makes the sunsets nice too. Sun rise doesn't need any help!

I actually have the place to myself a couple of days....except there are carpenters here installing new windows and doors on a two bedroom rental we're building, trying to get ready for High season.....But they'll be gone in a couple of hours, then I don't expect anyone else until Tuesday night when my staff comes home. This is indeed a rare treat, I've never had this many days in a row without anyone here before that I can think of.

So, what's your story?

Have fun,

Margarita
